Belle Valley Ancient Grains Farm

As we traveled from Belfield, ND to our Harvest Host site in Newell, SD for the next night we saw numerous pronghorn antelope grazing alongside the road and occasionally jumping onto the road which made for a bit of extra excitement.

When we arrived at the farm we were greeted by the owner, Brian, who showed us where to park and gave us information on the different types of grain he grew there. After getting Wander set up we joined up with two other couples and Brian for a farm tour. Brian did a great job of explaining the planting and harvesting process showing us the various pieces of equipment he uses on the farm.

After enjoying the hands on tour we relaxed with a pleasant couple, Kelly and Chris, from Oklahoma who were just starting out on their cross country tour. We shared traveling ideas and stories of our families over tasty cheese, crackers and wine. The next morning we were able to purchase a few items from Brian and he gifted us with a loaf of fresh baked red wheat bread which was delicious. If our travels ever bring us back close to Brian’s farm we will definitely plan on staying there again.
